I could say “Don’t worry, honi, everything is going to be alright. The Trolley Dollies will be back. You can see them next time. It will be just as nice”, but that would be a massive porky pie.
It is The End of An Era.
After 5 years as resident act at Gate 69 the Trolley Dollies are kicking up their heels and heading off to sprinkle their magic around the rest of South Africa, and possibly beyond.
After helping establish Gate 69’s reputation for ‘the most fun you can have with your clothes on’ in the Mother City, the girls are off on tour.
What if they get offered a residency in, say, Benoni (the Paris of the East Rand) that is impossible to resist …
I have it on the highest authority (Cathy Specific, no less) that the high-flying hussies plan to bring their magic back to Gate 69 for a season sometime in the future. But who knows, all we have for certain is this one last hurrah.
All you coulda/shoulda/wouldas have the month of July to avoid a lifetime of regret. So seize the moment and book your tickets for Swansong, the show that will surely reach new heights and plumb new depths …
The legacy of Gate 69, the purple palace in downtown Cape Town where everybody gets to be themselves (or, often, someone much more fun and confident), will live on, but the Trolley Dollies are jetting off.
There is still time for you to be able to say: “I was there!” or, if you like, “They couldn’t have done it without me.”
