Professor Banerjee is the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was educated at the University of Calcutta, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Harvard University, where he received his PhD in 1988.

In 2003 he cofounded J-PAL with Esther Duflo (MIT; Director, J-PAL; Scientific Director, J-PAL South Asia) and Sendhil Mullainathan (University of Chicago) and remains one of the Lab’s directors.


Banerjee is a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Econometric Society. He is a winner of the Infosys Prize and a co-recipient of the 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for his groundbreaking work in development economics research.

J-PAL is a global research centre working to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. The Lab is anchored by a network of more than 900 researchers at universities across the world, including at UCT’s Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) where J-PAL Africa’s headquarters are based.

J-PAL conducts randomised impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight
against poverty.

Founded in 1975, SALDRU is based in the School of Economics at the University of Cape Town. SALDRU carries out applied empirical research and capacity building with an emphasis on poverty and inequality, labour markets, human capital and social policy. We strive for academic excellence and policy relevance.
