A festival of South African sista’hood on stage

Celebrating South African women through music, comedy and drama, the second Women’s Month Festival – Your Voice, Your Stage – runs at The Drama Factory in Strand from August 9 to 20.

Presented by The Drama Factory and F Creations, the festival will highlight female-centric productions, presenting stories created by and performed by women.

Just a few that caught our eye …

Rocksteady’s Women Of Rock Tribute Show:

Moving between decades from the 60’s until the 2000’,s Women of Rock highlights 27 iconic women in music: From Janis to Alannis [Alanis?], Patti Smith to Pink, and Blondie to the Bangles, RockSteady performs songs that everyone remembers and loves.

This energetic and fun musical feast gets audiences on their feet, singing and dancing.

Featuring: Sharyn Seidel Kometz, Pamela Levesque, Colin Plit, Damian Rijkers and Josh Buchalter.

The Authentic Way to Fake It:

Written by Angelica Hattingh and Bianca Rasmussen and proud to be back in its hometown after sold-out shows in Joburg.

This romantic comedy is set in a bathroom (we think) at an event, where Fern (who is trapped) encounters various other characters who “explore the facade of authenticity, the detachment of connection and the question of identity”.

Sounds a bit cryptic, but we’ve all been there, right?

Directed by Bianca Rasmussen.
Produced by A&B Productions.

Angel’s Angels:

Angel Campey, Mel Jones, Kate Pinchuck and Tumi Mkha and their special brand of stand-up comedy, as heard on Angel’s Smile 90.4FM drive time show, The Joyride.

“Astoundingly funny,” we are reliably told.

The Muses: Hades Gonna Hate:

Aurora Maine (Trent Rowe), Queen Quarantina (Innes Maas) and Liquid (Ramsey Lewis) in The Muses: Hades Gonna Hate

A fabulous drag musical written, directed and produced by Kimberley Buckle.

The Muses receive a call from Hades [and then something about ageing (No!), selling souls (Why not?) and social media].

In the spirit of the art of drag, the show is a celebration of femininity and self-expression.

Tribute is paid to some of the greatest female musical icons of all time (Britney, Beyonce, The Pussy Cat Dolls and others) as well as celebrating new up and upcoming performers.

A lot more than a Girls Night Out!

In the words of festival co-producer, Faeron Wheeler, says: “Our aim is to promote women working in the arts, as well as give a voice to female stories, honouring the strength and tenacity of women in South Africa.

“We are also striving to create jobs and income for the arts sector that is still finding its feet after the pandemic.”

With a solar-powered invertor, fully licenced bar and cosy, welcoming atmosphere, The Drama Factory is the perfect venue to enjoy top-quality entertainment and celebrate the sista’hood.

Make a staycation of your visit with a night or two at one of their accommodation partners (The Views Guesthouse, 185 on Beach, or Majorca House) to enjoy the many other activities on offer, or just to revel in the gorgeousness of the surrounding Helderberg region.
