The Mzansi Tenors at Theatre on the Bay
10 South African tenors belting out classics, hits and their own creations in a show that reminded us that what unites us is so much more powerful than what divides us.
A production that reflects on many timeless stories of people following their improbable dreams, from Christ to Caruso, Miriam Makeba to Madiba, this show is a treat for the senses and an awe-inspiring reminder of our oneness.
There are words, yes, but since we don’t understand many of the languages, this feels like non-verbal communication of sounds and a deep rhythm that vibrates between us. The tenors sing in many languages, from Xhosa to Italian, but mostly this is the language of the soul.
Hosted by Richard Cock and supported by Rand Merchant Bank, the Mzansi Tenors’ programme showcases the group’s signature Afro-opera style through well-known tenor arias and South African hits.
“You are sure to get shivers down your spine,” says Cock, who is on stage frequently, weaving the show together with some background and context.
On opening night there was a big surprise guest appearance, and two encores from the Mzansi Tenors. Still, we were left longing for more.
Theatre on the Bay, Camps Bay, Wednesday 25 to Saturday 28. There are still some tickets, we are told.
