It doesn’t feel like there is an awful lot to say, except maybe Fuck Fuck Fuck. The Fugard Theatre felt like such a special place, every time I stepped in there. And now it is closing down, yet another victim of the damned plague.
As my dear friend and fellow theatre fan, Anne Taylor, says: “I am devastated. Every time I stepped in there I had a good time. I felt like I was in New York.”
We are not persuaded that it will be Covid safe or financially viable to reopen as a theatre in the foreseeable future.
The theatre will be handed back to the owner of the freehold of the building – the board of The District 6 Museum – as a working theatre and we hope that they will be able to use it for the benefit of the Museum and the District 6 community.”
