A day after watching (on television, from afar) as Pretty Yende sings at the coronation of King Charles III in London’s Westminster Abbey, some of us Capetonians will be popping down to a local church to listen to another of South Africa’s most fabulous sopranos (live and in the flesh).
SA-born, global star Yende will take part in a musical programme at the coronation that will include 12 newly commissioned pieces of music that, our royal sources tell us, were “designed to showcase musical talent from across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth”.

His Majesty, the King, was said to have personally commissioned the new music and shaped and selected the musical programme.

And in real life … this Sunday’s concert in the rather heavenly Christ Church Constantia features sensational soprano Lynelle Kenned performing with tenor Luvo Maranti and Stefan Lombard on piano.
Following on from the fabulous afternoon with the Kyle Shepherd Trio in the church, Lynelle, Luvo and Stefan will present a programme of famous arias and much-loved duets by Vivaldi, Verdi, Puccini and other musical greats.
Tickets for Songscapes on Sunday 7 May are R150 (unreserved seating) with booking via Quicket (quicket.co.za), or by calling Anne on 082 218 0100. Entry for children 14 years old and younger is free.
PS Luvo Maranti is a member of the Mzansi Tenors.
